Description

The written prayer excavated from the Wooden Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad of Sinheungsa Temple reveals the exact production date of these statues as well as the identity of the artisans who made them. The statues were made in 1651, and are regarded as important materials for studies of the history of Buddhist sculpture in the 17th century. The list of artists who participated in the production of these statues suggests that the molding, gilding, and coloring of the statues were carried out as separate procedures, providing significant information about the production of Buddhist statues in the mid-Joseon period. The Buddhist monk Muyeom, who made these statues, was one of the most renowned sculptor-monks in the early and mid-17th century, along with Hyeonjin and Cheongheon. The Wooden Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad of Sinheungsa Temple exhibits his style and techniques, as well as how his disciples inherited his artistic achievement.
