Description

Enshrined in Gyeongheungsa Temple in Gyeongsan, this Sakyamuni Buddha Triad was carved in 1644 as shown by the written prayer discovered inside the statue of Sakamuni, the triad’s principle Buddha, as well as in an inscription on its pedestal. Records of the time, including the background, organizer, and maker of the statues contained in the offerings stored in the Buddha’s body make the relics valuable sources of knowledge on the Buddhist statues of the 17th century. The statues and related materials show that Cheongheo, a monk carver representing the 17th century wooden sculpture, was based in Geumsansa Temple in Jeolla-do and invited to many temples around the country from the early to mid-17th century. The austerity and simplicity in the depiction of the Sakyamuni’s divine marks and signs, stately proportion, expression with straight brush strokes and carefully depicted robe folds exhibit a style similar to that of the works by the two monk sculptors, Cheongheon and Cheongheo, in the 1640s. The triad provides a wealth of information about the characteristic style of the Korean Buddhist sculpture in the mid-17th century, a high level of artistic and religious achievement, and the world of art achieved by the monk sculptor Cheongheo. It is arranged in a chronological order.
