Description
This royal certificate of meritorious subject was issued to Kim Eung-nam in 1604, in recognition of his contribution in escorting King Seonjo and the crown prince to safety during the Japanese invasion in the late 16th century. The royal certificate was conferred to a total of eighty-six loyal subjects who followed the king from Seoul to Uiju, including Yi Hang-bok, Yi Won-ik, Jeong Tak, and Kim Eung-nam. The royal certificate of meritorious subject issued to Kim Eung-nam provides valuable information for the compilation of his biography as well as for studies of the history of the Japanese invasion in the late 16th century. Many royal certificates of meritorious subject are designated as treasures now, but this one has retained its original appearance in the best condition. Moreover, it is one of the rare examples to include information on the composer and calligrapher of the certificate’s text.
