Description
The Portraits of Indra, Brahma, Eight Vajras, and Four Bodhisattvas of Gaesimsa Temple are paintings intended for display during Buddhist rituals and were painted in 1772. These paintings are referenced in the note found at the bottom of Jeongjejae geumgang bosaldo No. 6 which states that they were painted in 1772, when the Hanging Painting of Gaesimsa was painted. Hanging paintings surviving together with associated ritual paintings displayed during Yeongsanjae are extremely rare. These ritual paintings of Gaesimsa, although in coarse brushwork and somewhat stylized and stilted in tone, are highly valuable insofar as they form a complete set with the associated thangka, and are likely to cast important light on the style of this genre of Buddhist paintings, made for outdoor display during rites.
