Description
The Sermons of Yuan Buddhist Priest Mongsanhwasang is a guide book to discipline for monks and it was widely circulated in the Joseon Dynasty. It is a woodblock-printed book measuring 30.5cm in length and 20.2cm in width and it was published at Gangyeongdogam, the institute where Buddhist scriptures were translated into Korean and published, in the 7th year of the reign of King Sejo (1461) the Joseon Dynasty. Monk Bojejonja of Goryeo copied parts of the sermons, and Monk Hyegakjonja translated them. It is not certain when this book was made, but it is believed to have been printed around the 13th year of King Sejo's reign (1467). This is one of a number of Buddhist Books translated and published in the early Joseon Dynasty. It is a valuable source for the study of Buddhist history as well as the early stages of Hunminjeongeum, the Korean alphabet created by King Sejong .
