Description
Mongsanhwasang beobeo yangnok (Sermons of Buddhist Monk Mongsan with Commentaries in Korean) is an abridged text of the sermons given by a Yuan Chan monk named Mengshan De-I (1231-?) that was translated into Korean and annotated by Sinmi (fl. 15th century), a Korean monk of early Joseon (1392-1910). Published in 1467 by the Gangyeongdogam (Directorate of Buddhist Publications, responsible for the publication of Buddhist scriptures), this book is now widely regarded as a valuable source of knowledge on Korean language in the fifteenth century. The book is also an important primary source for studies of the Korean writing system invented just before its publication, as it was one of the first instances in which the system was used to translate a text.
