Description

Though rusty in general, the Bronze Bell with Inscription of “Daehyewon” was well produced and has been preserved in relatively good condition. According to the inscription carved on the main body of the bell, it was made in 1223 to be enshrined in Daehyewon Temple in Jukju (present-day Anseong), Gyeonggi-do. A loop and sound tube are attached to the top of the bell, and the upper section of the main body is decorated with a top ornamental belt with a flower petal design. The shape of the bell and the top loop, and the location of the top and bottom ornamental belts are characteristic of Buddhist bells made in the Silla Period, while the application of the top ornamental belt with a flower petal design is the representative feature of Buddhist bells made in the late Goryeo Period. Among the Goryeo Buddhist bells discovered so far, the Bronze Bell of Oeosa Temple in Pohang, and the Bronze Bell with Inscription of “Eulsa” (kept at the National Museum of Korea) display close similarities to this bell in terms of their overall shape and carved designs.
