Description
The Celadon Prunus Vase with Incised Lotus and Branch Design and Bamboo Strip were excavated from a Goryeo ship excavated from Mado Island in Geunheung-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. They are assumed to have been made between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The lotus branches, petals and buds expressed on the Celadon Prunus Vase with Incised Lotus and Branch Design are very similar to those of the Celadon Prunus Vase with Incised Lotus Design (National Museum of Korea), which is thought to have been produced between the 11th and 12th centuries. Also, the surface of this vase was decorated with clear and transparent grayish blue glaze, suggesting that it inherited the traditional style of vase production. The color of the glaze, its well-formed structure, and elaborate carving techniques attest to the vase’s artistic value, while its overall shape and incised decoration provide important information on the long tradition of prunus vases.
