Description
This bottle with a low heel and wide mouth was found along with National Treasure No. 786. It is 5.3 cm high while the diameter of its mouth is 5.3 cm and that of the base is 7.7 cm. Although its lower part is voluminous, the jar looks slim and elegant because of its slightly long neck. Many experts believe that this was used as a wine bottle in various annual events at the royal palace. There is a portrayal of a dragon whose three-way claws are stuck out and whose mustache flutters in the midst of clouds as it is trying to get hold of a cintamani. Judging from the exquisite shading applied in the head and body of the dragon, many presume that this is a work of a respected artist belonging to the royal palace. The realistic portrait of the dragon is copied from a design on white celadon porcelain made at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty and is completely different from the ones found from the late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, the design is finished with a single horizontal line rounded only on the part of the heel support. This is the only example of white celadon porcelain with a dragon design. Many experts agree that it was made at a government kiln in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do in the early 16th century. The white porcelain made from a white clay base and with light blue enamel coating is typical of those made in the early Joseon Dynasty. This piece provides valuable information for scholars who study the art of Korean pottery.
