Description
The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Cheongnyeonsa Temple, Ganghwa, displays the sophisticated, elegant style of Buddha statues made in the Goryeo Period, with its dignified appearance and the nicely-carved creases in the robe. As it displays similar characteristics to other statues made in the 13th century - for example, the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaeunsa Temple (made in 1274), the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Gaesimsa Temple (made in 1280), and the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Suguksa Temple (presumed to have been made in the 13th century), it is assumed to have been produced during the early or mid-13th century. As well as clearly demonstrating the dignified and refined beauty of Buddhist art in the Goryeo Period, this statue is aesthetically complete and possesses great religious significance.
