Description

The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad has been preserved in good condition (except for the restored jeweled crown and pedestal of Bodhisattva). This Buddha triad displays the traditional style of the Goryeo Period, which consists of a seated main Buddha at the center and a standing Bodhisattva on both sides. The statues’ upper bodies, and especially the protuberances on the top, are unusually long, creating a unique impression. The big head of conch-shaped hair and the simply-carved robes are typical characteristics of Buddha statues produced from the early Joseon Period. The statues of Bodhisattva were produced circa 1610, and show many similarities with the standing Bodhisattva of Yaksuseonwon Temple (currently kept at Dongguk University Museum), which was made in 1620. In addition, the letter of invocation related to the production of these statues contains the name of a new monk-sculptor, Inil, providing valuable information for research on Buddhist statues of the Joseon Period.
