Description

This Buddhist painting was produced in 1739 by six monk painters, including Hyesik, with the support of a donation made by Cheook. The painting is densely packed with thirty-one figures, including the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad, Ten Underworld Kings, demonic messengers, and prison keepers, while its overall composition displays a well-balanced arrangement as the numerous background figures are painted smaller than the central Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva figure. Each figure is expressed in detail, even down to the beard, attesting to the proficiency of the painters. Among the surviving paintings of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, this one was produced during a relatively early period and shows the typical characteristics of Buddhist paintings produced in the early 18th century in Gyeongsang-do.
