Description

The Wooden Seated Sakyamuni Buddha Triad and Excavated Relics from the Statue of Boseongseonwon Temple, Daegu, are considered invaluable materials for research on Buddhist statues in the 17th century. Notably, a letter of invocation excavated from the statues provides detailed information about their production, including the production date (1647), the temple in which these statues were enshrined, and the artists who participated in their production. The Wooden Seated Buddha Triad of Boseongseonwon Temple is the first known case of a monk, Hyeonuk, leading the entire work as the chief sculptor. The statues’ immaculate faces, beautiful bodily proportions, and overall upright appearance suggest that Hyeonuk inherited the style and techniques of his teacher, Cheongheo, who was one of the most renowned monk-sculptors during the 17th century. However, the short chins and plump jaws of the statues reveal that he was also influenced by the different styles of other monk-sculptors such as Hyeonjin and Suyeon.
