Description
Beopjip byeolhaengnok jeoryo byeongipsagi (Excerpts from the Dharma Collection and Special Practice Record with Personal Notes) is a book published by Buddhist Monk Jinul (State Preceptor Bojo, 1158-1210) of Goryeo by combining some excerpts from the Beopjip byeolhaengnok (Dharma Collection and Special Practice Record) written by Zongmi (780-841), a Buddhist scholar-monk of Tang China who was installed as the fifth patriarch of Huayan School, with his own interpretations. It is a xylographic work published in 1486 at Gyubongam Hermitage of Mudeungsan Mountain in Gwangju, Jeolla-do. Containing a wealth of Jinul’s ideas about Zen Buddhism, the book was widely adopted as a required textbook among the Buddhist academies across Korea during the Joseon Period (1392-1910), resulting in the circulation of about 20 different editions. Among them, the edition published by Seongnyongsa Temple is generally regarded as superior to others not only because it is the earliest but also because it maintains its excellent printing condition complete with the preface and postscript. The postscript contains information on the background of and participants in the publication, serving as a valuable source of knowledge on the Buddhist studies and publications of the early Joseon Period.
