Description

Chil taebuin gyeongsuyeondo (Celebration for Longevity of Seven Elderly Ladies) is a copy of the painting that depicted a banquet held in the 8th month of 1691 by the king’s order and support to celebrate the healthy, long life of seven noble ladies aged over 70 and whose sons were serving as high-ranking officials. Reproduced before 1745, the painting provides a fine example of the tradition of recording important family celebrations with painting as established among the ruling class of Joseon. Despite the fact that this is a duplication made at a later time, the painting has still been widely praised for the composed yet firm, brush stokes, elaborate expression of details, and persistent focus on the central event and effective delivery of its message. The use of hand-scroll format on which the event is arranged horizontally according to the passage of time is also highly regarded as a rare example. The hand-scroll contains a piece of calligraphy written by Gang Se-hwang (1713-1791) when he was 33 years old, adding to its value not only because it informs viewers of the exact date of its production but also due to Gang’s early handwriting, which has been very rare. The postscript reveals that it was originally composed by Gwon Hae (1639-1704), then First Counselor in the Office of Special Counselors and written by Gang 54 years later at the request of Gwon Jo-eon (1710-1778), the Counselor’s great grandson. The record shows that the painting is one of the earliest of its kind.
