Description

This square chimney formed one part of the wall of Jagyeongjeon Hall, which was the sleeping quarters of Jodaebi (Queen Sinjeong), legal mother of King Gojong. It was engraved in the center with sipjangsaeng, a design of animals and trees symbolizing longevity. This pattern, known as the most typically Korean-like pattern, was made to express a longing for Jodaebi's longevity. The chimney was made of bricks, with a tile roof, shaped to allow smoke to come out at the top. It fulfills its function as not only a chimney but also a piece of formative art, regarded as the most beautiful chimney of Joseon.
