Description
The Bronze Gong with Inscription of "Hwangni-hyeon Prefecture, discovered in Beopcheon-ri of Buron-myeon in Wonju-si, which was adjacent to Hwangni-hyeon (present-day Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do), was made in 1085 under the commission of a village headman from the Min family and who was also a minor military official. The gong is marked by many concentric circles on the surface with a lotus-decorated striking point at the center and a cloud pattern along the edge, a large sound hole at the back, and an inscription incised along the side wall as characteristic features of the Goryeo bronze gongs. The gong is comparatively small, but the elaborate front face with gently protruding concentric circles, matching concave circles at the back, and carefully wrought inscription along the wall exhibit great artisanship. This bronze gong is known as Korea’s fourth oldest bronze gong remaining today, following the Unified Silla gong with inscription “Sigongsa Temple” (865), Goryeo gong with inscription “Gyeongamsa Temple” (1073), and another Goryeo work inscribed with “Beophaesa Temple” (1084). In particular, the gong is highly regarded for the inscription on the side wall since it provides information not only on its production date but also on the local administration system of Goryeo and the old name of such bronze gong, Banja.
