Description

The Wooden Seated Manjusri Bodhisattva and Excavated Relics of Sangwonsa Temple in Pyeongchang consist of a wooden statue of Manjusri enshrined in Sangwonsa Temple in Pyeongchang and a collection of votive offerings discovered in a repository made inside the statue, including a written prayer stating that the statue of Manjusri was made in 1661 (2nd year of the reign of King Hyeonjong of Joseon). The bodhisattva, holding a ceremonial scepter, displays a stable figure and a serene facial expression rendered with masterful carving skills. Written by a renowned monk named Uicheon, the prayer stored in the secret repository contains detailed information on three major building projects conducted to renovate Sangwonsa Temple, and the enshrinement of the statue of Manjusri.
