“The Royal Certificate of Meritorious Subject Issued to Hong Ga-sin and Related Documents is a collection of documents related with the bestowal of a royal certificate upon a mid-Joseon civil official named Hong Ga-sin (1541-1615) by King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608), honoring him as a meritorious subject for his achievement in quelling the Yi Mong-hak Uprising in 1604. The documents include royal certificates honoring Hong Ga-sin and his parents for their meritorious deeds in times of national crisis, and other documents related with his achievements in the years before he was awarded the title of meritorious subject. These documents are now regarded as important primary sources on the political influence of aristocratic families in the Hoseo region, and on the uprising against the rule of King Seonjo by a minor royal named Yi Mong-hak (?-1596).
