Description

The Stone Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Triad and the Ten Underworld Kings of Cheongnyongsa Temple in Seoul are a collection of Buddhist images that was enshrined in the Hall of the Underworld (or Myeongbujeon Hall) at Cheongnyangsa Temple, Seoul during the mid-Joseon period. Made in the mid-17th century by a group of monk-sculptors led by Seungil, the images represent Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva with his two acolytes, as well as ten Underworld Kings, two Ghost Kings, two Judges, two Messengers, one Boy Attendant, and two Generals. The principal figure stands 92 centimeters tall and is characterized a square face with tightly closed lips, a disproportionately large head and a slightly crouched body – a style probably caused by the restrictions imposed by the shape of the original block of stone. The well-preserved set of images required to complete the altar of the Hall of the Underworld and a written prayer connected with them together constitute a valuable source of information that has deepened our understanding of Korean Buddhist sculpture of the mid-Joseon period.
