Description

Sungnimsa Temple was first built in the first year of the reign of King Chungmok (1345) of Goryeo in honor of Bodhidharma who had a nine-year intensive sitting in Zen practice at Shaolin Temple in Song Shan, China. Little is known about the founder of the temple. Judging from various records, the Bogwangjeon (Hall of the Vairocana Buddha or the Buddha of Enlightenment) of the temple is believed to have been built prior to the 17th century. The hall, with 3-kan (a unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) front space and 3-kan side space, has a gable roof called matbaejibung. The front and rear eaves of the building are supported by multi-cluster brackets; neither of the side eaves has brackets. Inside the hall dragon heads are carved on both edges of the main beam and the column-top brackets are engraved with designs of lotus flower, a dragon's body, and a dragon's forefeet clasping a magic ball. In its particular approach, the hall well represents the architectural style of the late Joseon Dynasty.
