Description
This buncheong ware in the shape of a bell was made and enshrined to mark the death of Kim Myeong-ri (1368-1438), who served the Joseon Dynasty as busa (deputy governor) of Seongcheon Dohobu. Regarded as extremely rare in terms of its shape, the bell-shaped funerary item features an asymmetrical tubular body tapering towards the base, a four-centimeter-tall lotus knob on top, and an epitaph inlaid on the surface in white slip. The epitaph is largely a biographical note on the deceased, although it also provides a few clues that complement the history of early Joseon. The inscription on the surface is widely regarded as a fine source of knowledge regarding calligraphy of the early Joseon period. With the information on its background, including its production date and burial site, as well as its unique shape, this funerary item is regarded as a valuable material that has increased our understanding of the development of pottery and calligraphy in medieval Korea.
