Description

The Wooden Seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of Cheongnyongsa Temple in Gimje was made in 1655 by a monk-sculptor named Joneung to be enshrined in Hyangnojeon Hall of Bongseosa Temple in Wanju. According to the prayer written to mark the creation of the statue, the bodhisattva was enshrined there in the belief that he would exert his divine power for the safety of the royal family of Joseon and the enlightenment of all sentient beings suffering in this world. The statue is characterized by a delightfully simple figure reflecting the aesthetic sensibility of ordinary Buddhists in the late Joseon period. The statue is also regarded as an important material for deepening our understanding of Korean Buddhist sculpture of the seventeenth century, particularly the development of the School of Byeomnyeong, who played a key role, together with his contemporary monk-sculptors such as Taejin, Hyeonjin, Cheongheon, Eungwon and Ingyun. Experts consider it one of the first works made by the sculptors led by Joneung, the head pupil of Byeomnyeong.
