Description
The Bronze Seated Bodhisattva of Goseongsa Temple in Gangjin is characterized by an exotic beautiful face bearing a benign smile, seated in the pose of royal ease, or maharaja-lalitasana. Currently there are about ten extant Buddhist statues from the Goryeo period (918-1392) that feature this unique sitting posture, of which this bodhisattva enshrined in Goseongsa Temple is the largest (height: 51 centimeters). It has been widely praised as being artistically superior to the other statues, and the rendering of the heavenly robe is particularly highly regarded for the excellence of the carving and casting work. The work is generally believed to have been made around the time that State Preceptor Wonmyo (a.k.a. Yose) established Goseongsa as a subsidiary temple of Baengnyeonsa Temple, and accordingly is considered an important material for the study of Buddhist sculpture of thirteenth- century Goryeo.
