Description

This historic stone stele discovered in Buyeo was erected to commemorate the foundation of a Buddhist temple by Sataek Ji-jeok, a powerful state official during the reign of King Uija (r. 641-660) of the Baekje Dynasty. It is generally regarded as the only known commemorative stone stele produced in Baekje to have been discovered so far. According to Nihon shoki (the Chronicles of Japan, c. 720 AD), Sataek Ji-joek, a member of the Sataek clan, one of the eight major clans in Baekje, ranked among Baekje’s leading officials and was dispatched as an envoy of the kingdom to Japan. The connection between the stele and other Buddhist architectural works devoted to such prominent historical figures makes it a valuable part of Korea’s cultural and historical heritage. The text engraved on the stele suggests that a piece of rhyming prose called Byeollyeomun (or Piantiwen) and the calligraphic style of Ouyang Xun (557-641) were popular in Baekje during this period.
