Description

This painting of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and the Ten Underworld Kings enshrined in Seobongsa Temple, Daegu was produced in 1741 by Segwan, a monk-painter based at Jikjisa Temple in the eighteenth century, together with his assistants, Samok, Wollyun, Seojing, Sungan, Jonhye, Upyeong and Eungjam. According to the postscript written on the painting, it was originally titled Yumyeonghoe, or Assembly of the Underworld, and enshrined in Muryangsujeon Hall of Namjangsa Temple. The painting is notable for its use of green and red color tones, elaborate fine lines, and stable appearance, as well as such facial details as thin eyebrows, narrow eyes and small lips, all of which are characteristic elements of Segwan’s work.
