Description
The Three Palace Plaques of Muryangsa Temple were made in 1654 by three artisans, Cheolhak, Cheonseung and Dogyun, for the peace and prosperity of the royal family. They display all the typical features of traditional Buddhist plaques, including elaborately carved dragons, gold and vermillion dancheong patterns, and a three-tier pedestal with a colorful railing, which together make it a great and representative piece of Buddhist woodwork of seventeenth-century Joseon. The fact that the plaques have a postscript containing the details of their production date and the names of the artists who participated in their production, and that they are larger than other similar plaques make them important sources of knowledge on the chronology of wooden Buddhist altarpieces of late Joseon.
