Description

Bullanggi Japo refers to a cylindrical chamber that was filled with gunpowder and projectiles and then inserted into a compartment in the rear end of a cannon. Each of the guns had 5 to 9 cartridges that were designed to be projected from the “mother gun” when ignited by a fuse. An inscription incised on the surface of this cartridge reveals that it weighs “75 geun and 8 nyang” (i.e. approx. 45kg), and was made in 1563 by an artisan named Kim Seok-nyeon. It was excavated at the site of the Gungisi (Government Arsenal) of the Joseon Dynasty along with other weapons including a gun barrel named Seungja Chongtong, large gun shells, and iron arrowheads. The fact that it has a clear production date makes it an even more valuable artifact than those without; and, along with the other cannon cartridge of the same type already listed as a Treasure, it is regarded as an important source of information on the history of Joseon’s firearms.
