Description

This ink wash painting consists of four opposing pairs of two panels, each depicting landscapes of mountain peaks. It vividly captures the seasonal changes with the use of a shading technique. The painting is considered particularly valuable because it has been preserved as a total set of paintings depicting the eight most beautiful scenes in the vicinity of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers and reflects the aesthetic tradition of early Joseon in which painting and poetry were held to be equally important by the literati class. The painting is also widely regarded as a fine example of the style of Korean landscape painting developed by An Gyeon (fl. 15th century) in the early sixteenth century, which is characterized by asymmetrical composition, large empty space, “crab claw” brush strokes, and the technique of using short lines and dots.
