Description
Dokseodang gyehoedo (Gathering of Officials at Dokseodang Study) depicts a meeting wherein members of the same group promoted mutual friendship and shared a love for poetic works. This painting contains the scene of this meeting held at Dokseodang, a national reading research organization designed to cultivate men of talent. Measuring 57.5 centimeters wide and 102 centimeters long, it was made around 1570 (third year of King Seonjo’s reign). It is uncertain who drew this painting. Nine renowned Confucian scholars, including Jeong Cheol, Yi I, and Ryu Seong-ryong, took part in this meeting, and the background of landscape and the shape of Dokseodang are emphasized in this painting. Mountains including the building of Dokseodang are slanted to the left, with the boats floating on the river in a row. The scholars are sitting on the left side of the building, and a person is going over a mountain. Mountains described with short lines and spots represent the style of An Gyeon’s painting. This painting is regarded as an important material for studying An Gyeon’s painting style.
