Description

Yeonjeong gyehoedo (Gathering of Officials at Lotus Pavilion) depicts a meeting wherein members of the same group promoted mutual friendship and shared a love for poetic works. Drawn on silk with bright colors, it measures 59 centimeters wide and 94 centimeters long. The painter originally recorded the name of the meeting on the upper side, the participants’ names and places of origin at the bottom, and the scene of the meeting in the middle part. Since the upper and bottom parts were cut out, however, it is impossible to know the specific name of the meeting and the participants’ names; only the middle part remains. Seven members are sitting around with the landscape as background, with women sitting in a row from their right side. This painting is named as such because there is a pond in front of the pavilion where the meeting is held. It shows the notable contradiction compared with similar types of paintings made in the early Joseon Period, since the scene of the meeting is highlighted with its background. In contrast, the paintings of the early Joseon Period had the scene of the meeting expressed only symbolically in the background. Thus, it is classified as a transient work moving from early to mid-Joseon.
