Description
Presumed to have been excavated at Geumgangsan Mountain (Jangyeon-ri of Hoeyang-gun, Gangwon-do), this gilt-bronze statuette of Avalokitesvara is in relatively good condition despite the exfoliation and green rust on parts of its surface. The elaborate carving technique, luxurious ornamentation covering almost the entire body, tall bejeweled crown, disk-shaped ear ornaments, clearly delineated features and slender waist attest to the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhist art, which is thought to have arrived in Korea during the period of transition from the Goryeo to the Joseon dynasty. This is why the statuette is regarded as an important material with regard to the interrelationship between Buddhist sculpture developed in Yuan, Goryeo and Joseon.
