Description

Painted by Jeong Seon (1676-1759, pen-name: Gyeomjae), this painting is a type of documentary painting that depicts Yuksangmyo Shrine in Gungjeong-dong and Baegaksan Mountain in Seoul. Jeong Seon pioneered the true-view landscape painting style in the late Joseon Period, wherein painters drew a beautiful landscape by actually observing it. Painted on silk, it measures 63 cm wide and 146.5 cm high. Yuksangmyo was built in 1725 (sixth year of King Yeongjo’s reign) to enshrine the spirit tablet of Royal Lady Choe, a royal concubine of King Sukjong and the mother of King Yeongjo. The names of the 18 people who participated in the establishment of Yuksangmyo are written at the top of this painting, with the low hills and various kinds of trees depicted at the bottom. Yuksangmyo is drawn at the back in the shape of a thatched house along with Bugaksan Mountain as background. According to a record on the upper left side, this painting was created in 1739 when Jeong Seon was 63 years old. It shows the typical style of the Southern School, which draws the tree, house, and mountain with black-and-white drawing and light coloring, expressing the inner world. It also reveals Jeong Seon’s painting style.
