Description

The Gilt-bronze Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad discovered at a stone pagoda in Maegok-dong, Suncheon consists of the principal Buddha, Amitabha, and his two attendants, Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha. The format of the triad and the headcloth worn by Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva are characteristic elements of fifteenth-century. The bronze shrine made to store the three statuettes has lost some of its original features due to amateurish repair work. A written prayer discovered with the artifacts revealed that they were made in 1468, and contains details about the shrine and the statuettes, making it a valuable source of information about aspects of Korea’s fifteenth-century Buddhist heritage.
