Description
Discovered in 1998 inside a wooden coffin tomb of Goryeo excavated at a road construction site in Myeongam-dong in Cheongju-si, this Goryeo ink-stick is the oldest known item of its kind in Korea. It is inscribed with the word “Dansanook,” providing tangible evidence that Danyang was one of the major producers of ink-sticks together with Maengju and Suncheon and prospered until the Joseon period. It is a valuable part of the Korean cultural heritage that can be productively exploited for the study of traditional Korean ink-sticks, particularly those produced during the Goryeo period.
