Description

While the tradition of worshipping arhats was firmly established and maintained throughout the Goryeo period (918-1392), there are only two surviving arhat portraits from Goryeo, namely, that of Ajita, the fifteenth arhat, and another depicting Kalika, the seventh arhat. This particular portrait of the fifteenth arhat is somewhat damaged by exfoliation and creases that have accumulated over the several hundred years since its production. Given that only a very few Goryeo Buddhist paintings remain throughout the world today, with even fewer in Korea, this portrait is regarded as a very important element of the Korean Buddhist art heritage.
