Description
These portraits of the five hundred arhats contain postscripts showing that they were painted in the Eulmi and Byeongsin Years, which are, according to the art historians who analyzed the painting style and other features of the images, 1235 and 1236. The postscripts also reveal that the project of painting the portraits of five hundred arhats was supervised by an artist named Kim Ui-in, who was also known by the courtesy name of Daejeong. The paintings also contain information on the arhats, their names and places within the group, the date of production, the names of the sponsors and the goal of the project, thus constituting an important source of knowledge regarding Buddhist paintings of Goryeo.
