This book of the Shurangama Sutra (The Sutra of the Heroic One) published in 1309 is characterized by the use of faultless characters and fine quality printing and clear ink, suggesting that it is a copy of the first edition produced with newly carved woodblocks. The book is also noteworthy for the use of sundok gugyeol (""sequential glossing"") throughout the entire text. Of the three types of glossing techniques used in the period between late Goryeo (918-1392) and early Joseon (1392-1910), the one used this book is known to be the oldest extant example. The book is quite badly damaged but, as one of the first copies to be printed with the original Goryeo woodblocks, it is widely regarded as a valuable material for studies on the Korean language before the invention of the Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People) in 1446.
