Description

Vajracchedika prajnaparamita Sutra, popularly known as the Diamond Sutra, is a canonical scripture of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and is the second-most read sutra in Korea, after Maha prajnaparamita hridaya Sutra (The Heart Sutra). This volume is the hundred seventy-fifth of the six hundred-volumes making up the Maha prajnaparamita Sutra (Perfection of Transcendental Wisdom),’ translated into Chinese by the Tang-dynasty monk Xuanzang. A scroll consisting in ten interconnected sheets, it measures 510cm by 28.7㎝, and the text is written in gold on indigo paper. The sutra was published in 1055 (the 9th year of King Munjong’s reign during the Goryeo Dynasty), by Kim Yung-beom in prayer for the souls of his deceased grandparents and parents and the safety and well-being of his family. The text is carefully hand-copied and sumptuously illustrated. Five sheets at the head of the scroll are missing, and publishing information is provided at the tail. This sutra is the oldest surviving Goryeo Dynasty text of this type.
