Description
These wooden seated bodhisattvas, Avalokitesvara and Mahathamaprapta, who were until relatively recently worshipped as acolytes of the principal Buddha, are enshrined in Geungnakjeon Hall at Cheoneunsa Temple. According to a written prayer discovered in the hidden depository inside Avalokitesvara's body, these statues were carved in the sixth month of 1614 by a group of five monk-sculptors led by Hyeonjin. They are regarded as fine works representing the early phase of Hyeonjin's art and as valuable resources for the study of Buddhist art of the late Joseon period.
