Description
This is a portrait of Seo Gyeong-wu (1573-1645), a Neo-Confucian scholar-official who served in various government positions during the reign of King Seonjo (r. 1567-1608) of the Joseon dynasty, including Daesagan (Censor-General), Daesaheon (Inspector-General), Gyeonggi-do Gwanchalsa (Magistrate), Doseungji (First Royal Secretary), Hyeongjo Panseo (Minister Of Justice) and Uuijeong (Chief Minister of the Right). Nicely preserved in its original condition, this painting is regarded as a valuable source of knowledge on the characteristic elements of Korean portraiture of the seventeenth century. The portrait case is also regarded as an important part of the artistic tradition maintained in the late Joseon period.
