Description

Following its establishment in 1394 on a site in present-day Gyo-dong, Jeju-si, Jejuhyanggyo Local Confucian School was moved five times until it finally became established at its current location in 1827. Daeseongjeon Shrine, the institution’s main shrine hall, is a five-kan (one kan being a unit of measurement of the space between two columns) by four-kan structure featuring corner bracketing clusters, additional columns supporting the exterior under purlins, and extended wing brackets. The building is noticeably low, creating a stable, stately appearance, as it was designed to withstand the island's climate conditions including strong winds and torrential rain. As one of the most admired historic buildings in Jeju-do, the building is in good condition and exhibits various attractive characteristic features of the local architectural heritage.
