Description

These sarira reliquaries were discovered in 1916 when a pair of three-story stone pagodas standing in the Galhangsa Temple site was moved into the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. The reliquaries consisted of gilt-bronze bottles contained in copper jars which were, in turn, enshrined in the sarira depository made under the foundation stone of each pagoda. An inscription carved on the upper base stone of the eastern pagoda revealed when and by whom the reliquaries were made, thus providing valuable clues for our understanding of sarira reliquaries of the Unified Silla period (676-935).
