Description
Bronze gongs are one of the two main devices, along with temple bells, that have been used to create the ""Brahman's sounds"" at Buddhist rituals since the advent of Buddhism. This particular item, measuring 31.5cm in diameter and 10.5cm in width, and evenly covered with a patina, was discovered in Gyeongsangbuk-do and is generally regarded as a typical example of the temple gongs of Unified Silla (676-935). As the oldest relic of its kind discovered in Korea so far as clearly shown by the inscription engraved on it, this fine instrument has an unadorned surface and a delightfully simple, refined form, attesting to the great achievements of Silla artisans in the field of metal craft.
