Description
These woodblocks, currently stored at Hwaeomjeon Hall of Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon, were used to print the Commentaries on the Avatamsaka Sutra, a vast collection of 120 fascicles containing commentaries on the Avatamsaka Sutra compiled by a Song monk-scholar named Jingyuan (1011-1088). The remaining set consists of 2,347 blocks, as about 100 blocks have been lost from the original set. The Songgwangsa collection is the only remaining example of Avatamsaka woodblocks and the second largest collection of Buddhist scriptural blocks after those of the Koreana Tripitaka. The fact that such a large collection was produced at a single temple, no doubt requiring a large number of specialist, and without state support, confers even greater cultural value on these sublime relics.
