Description
Yaongjeong Pavilion in Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do was built in 1566 by Gwon Sim-eon to honor the academic achievements of his father Gwon Ui (pen-name: Yaong, 1475-1558), an esteemed local Confucian scholar. The pavilion has been preserved in its original condition complete with the original roof tiles and dancheong (decorative color patterns), and is a valuable material for studies of the Korean architectural heritage before the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592-1598). The pavilion is a four-kan (one kan being a unit of measurement of the space between two columns) by four-kan structure with a T-shaped layout, and consists comprises a large board-floored hall, two bedrooms furnished with ondol (traditional underfloor heating system), and a numaru (lofty board-floored terrace). As one of a few rare buildings to have retained the architectural features before the Japanese Invasion of Korea, it is considered worthy of inscription on the national cultural heritage list.
