Description

The Sakyamuni Buddha Triad enshrined in Munsusa Temple, Gochang consists of Shakyamuni Buddha flanked by Bhaisajyaguru Buddha and Amitabha Buddha. A prayer composed to mark the enshrinement of the statues shows that they were made in 1654 by a group of monk-sculptors under the auspices of devoted patrons, such as Gakseong, Seongo, Sangyu and Haesim, thus providing a few criteria for Buddhist sculpture of the seventeenth century. Similarly, there is an ink inscription on the upper part of the octagonal pedestal which states that the statues were restored in 1844 by Naewon under the supervision of Geungseon.
