Description

These eleven statues enshrined at Munsusa Temple in Gochang represent Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in the form of a monk and the Ten Underworld Kings in stately appearance. The other figures serving the court of the Buddhist underworld, including the two generals guarding the gate to the court, judges, ghost kings and boy attendants, are all missing. The statues retain traces of their turbulent history, including fire and theft, but the vivid coloring, stately figures, and the use of expressive techniques make them fine examples of Buddhist “underworld” sculptures of the mid-seventeenth century.
