Description
The existence of the Mitansa Temple site within the walled royal capital of Unified Silla (676-935) suggests that the temple was intended to play an important role for geographical location. At the site archaeologists found a fragment of a ceramic roof-tile inscribed with the name, ""Mitan (味呑)"", revealing that the temple once stood at the site recorded as “Mitansa” in the ancient work of history titled Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms, 1281). They also discovered archaeological features of the temple's main dharma hall, lecture hall, and main entrance. The three-story stone pagoda standing at the temple site is 6.12 meters tall and consists of 35 stone blocks. It lay in a ruined state, with parts of the base and body missing, until 1980 when it was restored by combining the remaining features with newly carved ones. The comparatively well preserved base is a valuable resource for the study of Unified Silla stone pagodas.
