Description
This painting of Amitabha Buddha delivering a sermon (currently enshrined at Bogwangjeon Hall of Dorimsa Temple in Gokseong) was completed in 1730 by a group of monk-artists including Chaein, Jinhaeng, Jeuksim, Gakcheon and Chaekhwal, under the supervision of Cheolmae. The painting is considered a fine piece of evidence of the influence that Uigyeom (fl. mid-eighteenth century), who is generally regarded as the great monk-painter of the eighteenth century, had upon his followers. It also contains important sources that can increase our understanding of the style of Buddhist altar painting in the early eighteenth century and the genealogy of, and exchanges between, monk-artists during that period.
